Sev= eral hunting accidents have occurred this year.=   One was on Saturday, December 6th in Greene <= /span>County.  The 41 year-old S= tafford C= ounty man was shot in the chest by his fellow hunter after b= eing mistaken for a deer.  He was n= ot wearing blaze orange as required by Virginia law.

I recently received the VDGIF Hunting Incident (Firearms/Treestand) report covering the periods from July 1, 2007 to= June 30, 2008.  There w= ere 11 by Rifle, 3 by Muzzleloader, 2 by Crossbow and one by a handgun.  Only one bowhunting incident occurred wh= ich was in B= edford C= ounty.  The vic= tim stood up in the tr= eestand to put on his safety harness when the part that attached to the seat snapped & he fell 20 feet.  This j= ust shows that bowhunt= ing is much safer then firearms.  = But, we all need to be careful when hunting from a treestand and using a safety ha= rness.

Karen Holson, the VDGIF Outdoor Education Supervisor and Virgin= ia NASP State Coordinator, has asked us if any of our VBA members in the surrounding areas of Augusta County would like to help with their “First Annual NASP= State Tournament on February 28, 2009 at the Augusta Expoland in Fishersville, VA., = and in cooperation with Western Virginia Sports Show.  They need volunteers to help with = the following:

Line judges (helpful to know scoring on the ten rings) al= so inspect the bows for sight markings

Registration

Bow loaner and repair

Scoring / score card processing

Relief workers

In conjunction with working with the VDGIF, this would be a gre= at opportunity for the VBA to let folks know about our organization, what we d= o, our VBA clubs, our ASAP program and getting folks involved in archery.  To date they have over 25 schools = that have expressed interest in participating in this event.  The deadline for the schools to re= gister is January 30th, so she will know more on how many students will= be coming.

If you are interested, please contact Karen as soon as you can.  Karen can be reached at = 804-367-6355 (office) or at 804-640-7957 (cell) or email her at K= aren.Holson@dgif.virginia.gov.  She will be glad to give you furth= er information and details on this event.
